Idebenone (pronounced eedy-be-known), a super antioxidant, is now being used in select anti-aging skin care products. That's good news for you if you need to get rid of some extra wrinkles that none of us can avoid as we grow older.

While idebenone has been known for a long time as a pharmaceutical agent, it has arrived to the realm of skin care only recently. In fact, some skin care companies claim it as a new, cutting-edge discovery. But, can it really benefit your skin?

In the 1970s and 1980s, researchers had been studying the potential of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), including its ability to improve heart failure, reduce free radical damage and slow down certain neurological conditions. CoQ10, a vitamin-like natural compound found in all aerobic organisms, plays an important role in cellular energy production and is also an effective antioxidant. Trying to boost CoQ10's therapeutic effects, scientists synthesized and tested a variety of its chemical analogs and derivatives. Most of these derivatives were found ineffective or unsafe. However, one of the few exceptions was idebenone.

It is closely related to CoQ10 in its structure. However, idebnone is more effective than CoQ10 in protecting cells from the free radical damage resulting from reduced blood flow.

What does all this have to do with skin care? Recently CoQ10 has been shown to improve skin wrinkles. Not surprisingly, some skin care companies decided that CoQ10 analogs might do a similar or better job. So, they found out that idebenone was also a good anti-wrinkle remedy.

It's important to realize that free radicals that form in the skin in response to the sun's ultraviolet rays are largely responsible for wrinkling and other signs of aging. To fight these damaging molecules, cosmetic chemists developed this topical antioxidant that's even more powerful than natural antioxidants such as vitamins C and E.

Results of a clinical trial were presented in February 2004 at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology. They wanted to find out which ingredient offered the best protection against free radicals. Well, it was idebenone that finished first against vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, kinetin, and alpha-lipoic acid.

The benefits of this ingredient include shielding skin from environmental damage, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and reducing dryness and smoothing skin texture.

Antioxidants help protect against the damage caused by free radicals in the environment. Free radicals are unstable compounds that occur naturally in the body and try to stabilize by attaching to the nearest normal cell. This results in a chain-reaction because once the free radical attaches to a healthy cell, it too becomes a free radical in search of stabilization causing cellular damage. Antioxidants, such as idebenone and others, stop this process by donating a molecule to the free radical making it stable.

But, you should know that although idebenone is thought of as a wrinkle reducer, it is more of a skin protector. It is a true antiaging phenomena because it blocks the causes of aging and treats its effects. For best results, use it in addition to a broad spectrum sunblock.

However, this all comes at a price. This wonderful ingredient is priced at up to $120 an ounce. As you know, nothing known to science will erase all signs of aging, but this formula helps with its ability to decrease collagen breakdown (which means less apparent wrinkles and lines) and reduce inflammation.

It is interesting to read a little bit about peanuts! Did you know that adding them to your antiaging diet can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease? For some time it is been known that peanuts are actually known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Since peanuts are actually legumes and not nuts, they are beneficial especially when it comes to cardiac health. Unfortunately, society has related compulsive consumption behavior to peanuts. Researchers at Purdue University have demonstrated that chronic peanut consumption has benefited many people and might improve cardiac health. They did a study of 15 healthy men and women for 30 weeks to assess the effects of peanut consumption under three different dietary conditions. They concluded that peanut consumption actually reduces serum triglyceride levels by 24% when peanuts were added to regular diet regimes. In addition to reducing cardiac health problems, the nuts add fiber, folate, magnesium, copper and arginine to the dietary intake. The Purdue University study concluded that no significant or noted increase in body weight occurred in any other subjects in the 30 week trial. Nowadays, theres more to retaining and attaining a beautiful complexion than simply applying topical creams and lotions. Wouldnt we all like to age gracefully (if at all for that matter!) and ward off the wrinkly signs and ill symptoms for as long as possible. Keys to longevity may be more accessible than we think, and it appears our diets play a critical role. Antioxidants are the knights in shining armor that subjugate the attack of free radicals in the body, the hazardous molecules that damage cells and procure aging and disease. Though antioxidants are produced naturally in the body, these decline with age, hence an increasing need to acquire them from the foods in our diet.

Before examining antioxidants more closely, it is important to take a look at the free radicals they serve to neutralize.

Free Radicals

Free radicals are created as by-products in our use of oxygen during metabolism such as the burning of food for energy. They are essentially oxidant molecules that are missing an electron and seek to restore themselves by targeting nearby cells in an attempt to recover this electron, potentially harming enzymes, DNA, proteins and cell membranes in the process. This damage can mutate cells and alter cell function, increasing the risk of numerous diseases and chronic conditions including arthritis, diabetes, cataracts, cancer, heart disease and stroke. Free radical damage is implicated in the onset of aging and its degenerative symptoms and diseases.

As well as generated within the body, free radicals come from environmental sources such as pollution, radiation, unhealthy foods, bacteria, viruses, cigarette smoke and UV light.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants serve to mitigate the harmful effect of free radicals by giving up an electron and stabilizing them in the process. Although we produce many of our own antioxidants within the body, food provides an essential source for these key players of our defense system. Vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients all have antioxidant properties. The most common examples include vitamins A, C and E, selenium and zinc, carotenoids, flavonoids, co-enzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid and glutathione.

As there are many different types of free radicals in the body a variety of antioxidants are required to protect against them. Antioxidants function best as a team, with each other and other nutrients and phytochemicals, which is why incorporating a wide range of plant foods into your diet is recommended. Phytochemical groups such as flavonoids and carotenoids correspond to the colour, taste and smell attributes of plants, hence eating a rainbow array of vegetables and fruits can offer a diverse selection of these potent antioxidants.

Antioxidant Rich Foods

Foods especially high in antioxidants include berries, plums, pomegranates, oranges, spinach, green tea, avocado, kale, broccoli, peas, onions, grapes and pure chocolate.

Scientists at the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) have developed a rating scale that measures the total antioxidant capacity of a given food. This is known as the ORAC score (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity).

Of 40 common fruits and vegetables measured by the USDA, top ranking scores were those of prunes(5770), raisins (2830), blueberries (2400 highest of all fresh foods with other berries close behind), kale (1770), spinach (1260), Brussels sprouts (980), plums (949), alfalfa sprouts (930), broccoli florets (890), beetroots (840), oranges (750 ), red peppers (710 ) and red grapes (739).

Pure cocoa surpasses all these foods with a whopping score of 26,00 units, more than 10 times the prestigious blueberry (though one is likely to eat far less in quantity). The extraordinary goji berry from Tibet also has outstanding antioxidant capacity with a score of 18,500 units; hardly surprising as they contain 500 times more vitamin C than oranges and even more beta-carotene than carrots!

According to studies on animals and human blood at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts in Boston, high-ORAC foods may slow aging processes in the body and brain. Results found that high ORAC foods such as blueberries and spinach could increase the antioxidant power of human blood by 10-25%, prevent loss of long-term memory and learning ability in middle-aged rats, and protect rat blood vessels against oxygen damage.

Antioxidants and Aging

As we age, free radical levels rise and yet the body falls short in producing necessary amounts of antioxidants to meet this challenge. For example, cells generate more of the oxidants hydrogen peroxide and superoxide, yet levels of the necessary antioxidant glutathione required to neutralise these decline. The Free Radical Theory of Aging, first proposed by Harman in 1954, is supported by cross-species examination of animals with regard to life span, free radical damage and antioxidant defence. For example, the white-footed mouse lives about twice as long as the house mouse (8 versus 4 years), and is found to generate less oxidants and have higher levels of antioxidants. As Beckman and Ames write in The Free Radical Theory of Ageing Matures (1998), Together, interspecies comparisons of oxidative damage, antioxidant defences, and oxidant generation provide some of the most compelling evidence that oxidants are one of the most significant determinants of life span.

Very recent evidence comes from a study on dogs at the University of Toronto by Dr. Dwight Tapp and colleagues who found that old dogs that were on an antioxidant diet performed better on a variety of cognitive tests than dogs that were not on the diet. In fact, the dogs eating antioxidant-fortified foods performed as well as young animals.

Additional research by Dr. Rabinovitch and his team, studying aging at the University of Washington, Seattle, found that mice engineered to produce high levels of an antioxidant enzyme (catalase) lived 20 per cent longer and had less heart and other age-related diseases than controls.

In light of the role free radicals play in the onset of aging and disease, it is important to ensure our diets include a rich and diverse supply of antioxidants. These protective agents can be found abundantly in vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds and are particularly high in superfoods.

Try to consume at least 1 g per day of omega-3 fatty acids, and you will significantly reduce the risk of sudden death sometimes experienced by heart attacks and other coronary artery-related ailments. Omega-3 fatty acids appear to reduce the triglyceride levels, stabilize the blood clotting mechanisms, and reduce blood pressure. Fish oil makes a good antiaging product in any diet and should be consumed on a regular basis. It is also been shown to potentially benefit the cardiovascular system and there is now nearly irrefutable evidence that omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart!

With more and more people living for longer periods, anti-aging is becoming big business. This article looks into what causes premature aging and gives advice on how to keep looking younger for longer.

The latest research shows that around seventy-five percent of skin aging is caused by an over exposure to the sun. This is a huge figure and one that has to be taken seriously for anyone who is looking at ways in delaying the aging process.

In my opinion this is actually common sense as when anything becomes burnt it tends to shrivel up and become all wrinkly. This is what can happen to peoples skin, it may not happen straight away but after maybe thirty years of this over exposure to the sun, wrinkles are likely to appear.

For people who enjoy spending time sunbathing as it makes them feel good and because they like looking tanned, I would advise a strong sun cream. This should be used regularly as per the instructions and if you start to feel your body burning up this is the time when you should be looking for some shade or to cover up.

It is also important to ensure we get enough sleep. Research suggests that people who only average around six hours sleep per night will age in looks far quicker than people who average eight hours.

Again this is very logical as if you have a period of a couple of weeks when you do not get enough sleep, bags can appear under your eyes. If you have a really good nights sleep you tend to wake up not only feeling fresh and awake but also looking fresh and healthy. My advice here for people who have developed these bags under their eyes would be to use a good eye cream or to gently massage their eyes every day.

Smoking can certainly speed up the aging process. To quit smoking is not easy however, but it is a must for people on a quest to delay the aging process. There are of course many other reasons to stop smoking, therefore be brave and look at ways to quit smoking today.

I have often heard people refer to somebody with a comment such as, he looks as if he has had a hard life. This is often referred to somebody who looks far older than they actually are. They look like they have not been looked after or that they have not had enough love in their lives.

What I think has happened is that they have had a stressful life. What we therefore need to do is to attempt to live as much of a stress-free life as possible. This of course is not that easy. What we need to do is to think in a more positive and pro-active way. We need to start to like ourselves and be happy with who we are and what we have. He conducted a formal review of 16 different studies to determine whether nuts are a factor in heart disease prevention. Of course, attention to your entire dietary intake is important when it comes to antiaging or preventing heart disease. He determined that eating an ounce of nuts, more than five times a week will actually reduce the risk of coronary artery disease an astounding 25 to 39%. Three to 4 ounces of nuts is equivalent to three or four tablespoons, and combined with some anti aging supplements, is a good first step in prevention.

Scientists haven't determined if some types of nuts are better than others, but they recommend eating, a large variety of different kinds. Their studies were based on different varieties. However, 50% of the nuts consumed in these studies were actually peanuts. Overall, nuts, regardless of the type are an excellent addition in your diet as an antiaging product.

Since nuts contain a lot of unsaturated fatty acids and are low in the saturated fatty acids, they seem to think this is the reason. Since the saturated fatty acids are a major cause of coronary heart disease and high cholesterol, they recommend substituting unsaturated for saturated fatty acids in your diet as a good cholesterol prevention method, and nuts appear to help these cholesterol levels. Remember as well, that good, antiaging health habits start on a daily basis, by consuming anti aging supplements and antioxidant antiaging products as well.

There are two schools of thought here. One group made up of health practitioners, scientists and manufacturers who strongly believe that anti aging is possible and mainstream medical providers who believe that fighting the aging process is pointless.

Let's look at both sides of the debate.

Mainstream medicine employs a rather limited, narrow point of view by refuting that nothing can be done to expand our lifetime here on Earth. I think it's reasonable to say that we now know that regular cardiovascular exercise and eating a healthy diet can make a significant difference to your health and your appearance.

Sleeping is another. Getting enough sleep is pivotal in the fight against aging. During sleep, cells regenerate, DNA is repaired and our natural growth hormone is produced and released.

Bet you didn't know you could do so much with your eyes closed.

Smoking. Kick the habit. Not only does it damage precious brain cells, it also dries out your skin. I was a smoker for 18 years and quit 11 years ago. If I can do it, so can you.

Alcohol. Moderate your consumption. We all know the dehydration that's associated with drinking, which can lead to your complexion looking old, tired and ruddy.

Now we have the other faction that believes that exercise and nutrition are important to the anti aging process. Great! However, it all falls apart after this by the promotion of products and or procedures that

~ paralyse your facial muscles by the injection of poisons into your muscle tissue

~ the use of fillers to mask wrinkles

~ stem cell injections foetal tissue extract in a syringe.

These procedures are dangerous not to mention some of which are plain unethical.

The thought of tissue extract from aborted and sometimes stolen babies being injected into me make me physically sick. How would you feel?

Face it, these treatments are simply an expensive cover up and after a few of them, you'll start to look a little odd.

These kind of tactics can be likened to painting a car with signs of rust. Just because you can no longer see the rust, doesn't mean it isn't there, eating away at your car underneath that fancy paint job.

Routine surrounding the original early start and methodical timing of preparation was focussed on the peaceful but definite outcomes of the Upcoming day. There was an awareness of the necessity to ensure the heart and mind be in the best possible order for completion of tasks assigned around external short lived needs.

Each was to be completed ensuring a smooth and positive outcome for a boss that may not have verbalized a standard. This was automatically acquired through the giving of highest quality brain power, behaviour and commitment coming from the respect given.

The new lifestyle after the daily or regular job conclusion must evolve around a pattern that still offers that level of commitment although the work pattern has changed somewhat.

Knowledge of food requirements, tastes, preferences, speed of consumption, bloating, constipation and an array of descriptions previously given little priority should now be dealt with. The previous level of respect must be maintained now that the new boss is the wonderfully made creation living inside.

Especially pleased will be the new Managing Director or original Creator of the machinery who has been unable to pour out the intenDed blessings whilst His machinery was not being cared for according to the rule book.
